About Hearing Loss

The subject of hearing loss can be a comprehensive one as there are many variations, and different causes for hearing impairment. So, how can you find out what “type” of hearing loss you have? Obviously, the first step to take is to make an appointment with a medical professional or audiologist, to get evaluated. During your appointment, they will perform basic tests to measure your level of hearing.

Put simply there are two main types of hearing loss. Conductive and Sensorineural (nerve) hearing loss. To briefly explain the difference, Conductive hearing loss is caused by interference with sound or transmission through the outer and/or middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss (often called nerve loss) is a result of disorders of the inner ear or the auditory nerve itself. It is also possible for a person to suffer with ‘mixed’ hearing loss, which involves both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This may sound very confusing, but most hearing specialists will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. Don’t be afraid to make a list, and take it with you to your next appointment.

You can also find a lot of information on the Internet. For example, at My-Hearing World, we provide a free on-line hearing test, and general information on hearing impairment. You can visit us on the following web address to find out more: http://my-hearingworld.com/

Hearing loss is a sudden or gradual decrease in how well you can hear. Noise-induced hearing loss can happen slowly over time. Listening to very loud music or using a lawn mower, can damage the structures of the inner ear, leading to hearing loss over many years. Sudden, loud noises, such as an explosion, can damage your hearing. Thanks a lot for such an interesting post.
